Tannoy wurde 1926 als Tulsemere Manufacturing Company gegründet und ist heute eine der weltweit ältesten und prestigeträchtigsten Marken für Audiosysteme. Der Firmengründer Guy
Fountain entwickelte damals einen Solid-State-Verstärker, in dem eine Legierung aus Tantal und Blei zum Einsatz kam. Aus den englischen Wörtern Tantalum (Tantal) und Alloy (Legierung) leitete er den heute weltberühmten Markennamen Tannoy ab.

Zurzeit ist Tannoy auf dem Gebiet Audiotechnik in drei Bereichen tätig: Hi-Fi-Anlagen für den Hausgebrauch, Beschallungsanlagen und Studiolautsprecher.

The entire crossover board undergoes Deep Cryogenic Treatment, a technique Tannoy developed for the flagship Kingdom Royal project.
